Rocky Horror - Sarah Dickerson
Wow, this movie was an interesting one. I’ve heard a lot of things about this movie and I could’ve sworn that I’ve seen it in the past, however, after watching it I definitely have not seen it before. I have to say, the actual movie itself I didn’t hate, BUT I am not a fan of musicals whatsoever. This made it quite difficult for me to keep up. I couldn’t help but roll my eyes a little bit each time someone broke out into music, which was quite a lot. When it comes to the queer aspects the movie really went form 0 to 100 pretty fast. It started pretty hetero from what I could tell with the straight wedding of Brad and Janet. That didn’t last very long when we met the “sweet transvestite from Transexual, Transylvania”. Dr Frank n Furter was an interesting character to say the least. Very rarely do I see characters in movies dress up in drag so that was fun for me to watch.
Something that I did like about this movie was how freeing it was. Whether that be the characters being so open about queerness and their sexuality, or just sex itself. From the first moment we met the queer characters they were obviously queer, there was no hiding it. I think this is great for viewers to see because it shows that you shouldn’t have to hide your identity and simply be who you are. That being said there will always be people to judge you, but those people will unfortunately always exist so you might as well be true to yourself.
I can’t think of a better word to describe this movie than wacky. I don’t think I will ever watch this movie again, but at least I can say that I’ve seen it now and I don’t regret watching it.
Discussion Update:
Since I wasn't able to attend the in class discussion I got as much of the class discussion information as I could've from reading my fellow classmates' updates. Something that I got from this is how timeless this film is. Although it's pretty old now this is still a film that most people recognize, especially queer people. Even though the representation might not be the best seeing such openly queer people on a screen is very encouraging to people who may be afraid to express themselves. Another thing that I got from my peers' posts is that simply put, this is not a good movie. That doesn't mean nobody likes it, I mean there are plenty of movies out there that I know are horrible movies but that doesn't mean I hate them! The movies kind of a mess, but that honestly gives it character and I would never judge someone for liking it even though it isn't necessarily my taste.
Sarah,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you completely! Although I didn't like this movie at all, I also thought it sent the message to viewers to be themselves and not care what others think of them. It was full of representation (both good and bad) but at least it's there! I also thought it was so hard to follow the story line and I HATE musicals too.. except for High School Musical lol. I hope I never have to watch it again, but at least I know what people are talking about when they reference it.
Sarah and Breanna,
DeleteI totally get where y'all are coming from. Personally I love this film but I understand the perspective that it's ridiculous every time characters break randomly into song. Although I do think it works in this film because it is all ready so cheesy that the musical aspect just adds another layer to it. I think "wacky" is the perfect word to use when describing Rocky Horror. I think that's what draws people to it though, seeing queer people be fun and weird because they're fun and weird people, not because they're queer.
