The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert- Olivia Vinci
This was by far my favorite movie we have watched this semester and I would 100% watch it again. I absolutely loved the main characters and how they all kind of bounced off of one and another. They were all different it their own ways and at different points throughout the movie you found out more and more about their personal lives and sort of the "demons" that they face outside of the world of being a drag queen and as a performer. Bernadette was a character that really spoke with me throughout this film. She is seen as an aging transgender woman who in her previous life she went by Ralph and is seen to be the one who is the most out spoken. She does speak her mind and lashes back at anyone who throws prejudice and bullying in their way. I also really enjoyed the character Bob who first comes out as a stereotypical male character and ends up being very excepting and respectful to these three individuals. He even stuck up for them when a group of guys that he was with tries beating up one Adam and he admired Bernadette for being apart of Les Girls which is surprising for what his character first portrayed. The representation of queerness throughout this film was amazing and definitely is portrayed in an amazing way. This movie really represents that it is okay to be who you are and this is shown in the movie when Ticks son is brought into it. I really loved that his son totally accepted him and accepted his career path and for doing things that made his dad happy at such a young age. Ticks wife also shows this throughout the film as well and I love their dynamic. Ticks wife is so okay with the fact that he left her to pursue his own dreams and holds no resentment towards him at all for leaving her. Overall, this is an amazing movie and the representation of queerness and backgrounds of the characters throughout the movie made me very intrigued and made it interesting for me to watch.
After reading through my classmates posts I saw a lot of individuals mentioning the cast of this film. The main concern is that all of these individuals are straight and play queer characters. I think that they obviously did an amazing job representing queerness and I personally thought the acting was amazing throughout this film. But i can understand why people would not like that these individuals are not queer in real life.
