Becoming Your True Self

Jared Lestenkof

I think I’ve seen “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of The Desert” before or at least I’ve seen scenes from it because I recognized a lot of it. It got to the point where I was trying to guess what was going to happen next and I was right half the time. I’ve seen my mom watch this movie before, I’m pretty sure that’s how I recognize it.

Anyways, I thought this movie was unique, it wasn’t my type of movie, but I enjoyed the story and the plot of it. While watching this movie it made me sad and feel bad for the characters the way they were treated for just being themselves.

What I really liked about this movie was the fact that they were just being themselves. They didn’t care what other people thought about them, all they wanted was to be treated like everyone else. My favorite scene was when Adam got chased by the homophobes and Tic, Robert, and Ralph came to his aid. It really shows the unity they have with each other and that no matter how much they irritate each other or don’t get along they will always have each others back. Simply because they are part of the same community and the only way to survive is to stick together. I mean that literally too. What if Adam’s friends didn’t notice he was being chased, he probably would’ve been killed. It blows me away that even in today’s day and age people can’t accept each other for who they are. In my opinion they are the bravest people out there because they aren’t afraid to show who they really are.

The only thing I didn’t like about the movie was when Ralph decided to stay. To me it lost the sentimental emotions they went through together on this journey and it looks like she was abandoning them. I missed the part why he wanted to stay so I think that’s why I didn’t like it.

In conclusion, I did enjoy this movie, but like I said it wasn’t my type of movie and I think I only like it because I took this class. So when I watched it I was watching it through the intersectional lens I was able to actually focus on the movie. I would definitely recommend this movie to my friends and family, but obviously they wouldn’t be watching it through an intersectional lens so I don’t think they would enjoy it, rather than understanding it. Also I think the unity between these three characters show the unity the LGBTQ+ community has and will always have.

  1. After reading my classmate's posts I realized something that I didn't think about. Why didn't they cast actual queer people for the roles? I'm not trying to discredit the movie, it had great performances and great visuals, but I think the movie would mean more for the LGBTQ+ community if the main characters were actually queer. I only say this because if I was a queer and saw this movie I could relate to it, but then finding out that the main characters aren't actually queer, it could discredit the real life experience queer people actually have.

  2. I really liked how mentioned that the characters in this movie act themselves and they do not really care what anyone thinks of them. I actually liked that Bernadette stayed, I think it added a little bit of a surprise to the movie and was something we did not really aspect because it was never mentioned throughout the movie than besides that moment. I also do agree that this movie does show the unity that the LGBTQ+ has with one another.
