Priscilla, Queen of the Desert -Sarah Dickerson
Before watching this movie I decided to look it up to see what to expect. When I did this it set my expectations pretty high and this movie did not disappoint. Something about Drag Queens always just gets me- the hair, the makeup, the drama, the exaggerated personalities. I just love all of it.
My main focus for this blog post is going to be on the characters. I loved how each character was portrayed so much differently but at the same time they meshed together so well. The reading for this week did a great job summarizing this. Bernadette was by far my favorite character in the film. There's no other word that I think can describe her better than a queen. My favorite scene in the film was when the lady at the bar tried to kick out the trio because they "don't accept their kind there". Bernadette kept her composure as the strong woman she is while also standing her ground. Winning the shot competition was also just the cherry on top. I could see her confidence grow as throughout the movie as she accepted her gender. I really like the relationship that Bernadette had with Tick. I think the reading did a good job describing Bernadette as a mentor type of figure for her. I found myself emphasizing for Tick a lot throughout the movie. He seemed as though he was really struggling to find themself and figure out his gender identity throughout the movie. It threw me for a loop when we as the audience found out that he secretly had a wife and son. And then there's Adam who is completely different than the other two, this isn't necessarily a bad thing. I mean someone has to keep things interesting. Adam is just so dramatic and wild, but there's always gotta be one of those types of people in the friend group. I watched this movie with Olivia and as we were watching it we were both talking about how this would be such a fun group to hangout with.
Of course I have to mention Bob too. The way that he glowed when he found out who Bernadette was nothing less than adorable. He was so accepting and supportive of the group, it was pretty heart warming.
As for the theme in this class, I think this movie made it pretty clear. Many different struggles that the queer community faces were represented. For example, Bernadette finding her true gender identity, Tick struggling with his issues from the past, and Adam rebelling and leading himself into trouble that probably wouldn't happen if he wasn't outwardly queer.
Overall I really enjoyed this movie and I'd definitely recommend it.
I like how you focused on the characters and their development rather than the movie as a whole. I agree with you about their character development and how they grow as a drag queen in a time where they weren't accepted
ReplyDeleteI agree so much, the characters in this movie truly are one of the defining factors of this movie. Bernadette is absolutely fantastic and every scene she was in only made me love her more. I also agree in that this movie does a fantastic job in addressing some of the struggles that the queer community faces.
