Rocky Horror- Olivia Vinci
When looking through the syllabus and seeing that we were going to eventually watch this movie, I definitely wondered if I would like it or not because I have heard both good and bad things about this film. It's that type of movie that you either love it or you hate it and for my first time watching it I was definitely very intrigued to see if I would enjoy this movie or not. Overall, I really did enjoy this movie, it was definitely not like something that I have ever watched before. I usually do enjoy musicals some what depending on the movie, but this was not what I was expecting this film to be like at all. The constant breaking into song was something I enjoyed for most of the movie but at times it got over bearing and made me not that interested and was hard for me to keep up with. The representation of queerness throughout this film was another thing I did not expect when watching it. From the first scene it went from a straight wedding and a straight couple being the main characters to many different acts of queerness very fast. I did also recognize a song from the movie "Time Warp" and it kind of caught me off guard cause I have heard this song many times and I never knew where this was from.
I loved the costume choices throughout this film it showed so many acts of queerness and all the drag looks through out this I loved so much. I also loved how open and freeing this movie is and it and by watching this it can make people want to express yourself and feel more accepted in society. The song that stated sweet transvestite from transexual, transylvania was most definitely a very bold scene and I loved it. It really showed the queerness in all of the characters and was fairly in the beginning of the movie so it was like it came out of no where and all these characters and different acts of queerness were all of a sudden out in the open. Overall, I really enjoyed this movie and it definitely will be something I would watch again.
When discussing this movie in class I came to the realization that I definitely understood this movie better because of taking this class. A lot of individuals in the class stated that they feel in love with the movie the second time that they watched and for me I enjoyed it but maybe I should give it another watch some time soon and see if I enjoy it even more. I loved how everyone in the class did agree that this is a bad movie but I agree that it is very campy and cheesy and that is what makes the movie so good and enjoyable. I thought it was interesting when someone mentioned how outrageously queer this movie really is. Throughout the movie queerness is portrayed everywhere but it is not something that is ever really brought or talked about. This kind of makes it feel like these characters are normal and that they are accepted into society and I love that their queerness is not a huge topic of discussion in the movie. This movie makes it look like it is fun and exciting to be queer and be this way and I think that was portrayed very well throughout the movie. I also really liked how the setting of this movie was based off of a space to be with queerness and represented that gender is not what you are it is what you do. This is a great way of showing that it does not matter if you are a boy girl or whatever you like, anything is acceptable. This movie is seen to be a sort of a safe place for people and I really loved how that was represented throughout the entirety of film. Overall I really enjoyed this movie a lot and is definitely something I would watch again!
ReplyDeleteHi Olivia! I love how you brought up the costumes in the movie. I also loved the drag looks throughout the movie. I like how this is something that we see more regularly today, too. This movie was probably a great breakthrough for people not being afraid to express themselves and show their true selves.
