Priscilla, Queen of the Desert - Emily Richards

I have heard so much about this movie over the years and never really knew what it was about until watching it this week in class.  I actually really enjoyed this movie.  I liked that it was a mix of drama, comedy, and musical in a way.  I liked how this movie was very queer.  These are the type of queer movies that I am used to watching and I love that we are getting to those types of movies in this class.  I loved seeing how being transgender back then was. It was definitely a different life then what we see today but in some ways with all the recent news about transgender people it kind of is similar.  People didn't really understand back them and its very similar today, where people still don't get transgender individuals.  It was really cool and interesting to see a trans individual so confident in themselves especially for the time period and area this movie takes place in and where and when it was made.  I loved getting to watch how open and honest these characters are, it was very refreshing to watch.  Over all, it was really great to watch a film with very open and care free queer characters.  That's something we don't always see so that was really inspiring to see.  I really enjoyed this movie all together and I think for a queer movie its a great showing or representation.

After reading others post, it really made me think about the friendships that are in this film. The characters in this movie are very close to each other and they will be there for one another. I think that its great to watch a film where friendship is one of the great plot points because movies where friends are they for each other are some of the best. I think especially in queer films that great to see because each person understands the other. I think having a plot that talks about friendship is something that can really make a film about acceptance really great.

  2. Hi Emily, I really enjoyed this film too! I definitely agree that they did a good job portraying how transgender individuals were treated and how they were affected by certain aspects at this period of time. The film was very open and queer and bubbly. It was really interesting to watch!

  3. Hi Emily! I think its interesting that you had some information on this film prior to watching it in class. I had no clue there was movies even remotely like this before watching it, it makes me wonder what else I am missing out on! I think that the friendships in this film was a great example of the idea of Queer Platonic Relationships

  4. Hey, Emily I had the same impression of this movie as well. I had no idea what to expect with this movie and I absolutely loved it. I loved the mix of comedy and banter that went on between the characters throughout this film. It certainly kept my attention. Also I agree with what you said about how confident these characters were with themselves. I feel like today a lot of queer representation in films is about queer characters coming out and not being happy with who they are as an individual. So like you said it was cool to see characters just be them.
