The Rocky Horror Picture Show: My absolute new favorite Musical
Hello everyone! Welcome back to my Bi-weekly blog! This week we're going to be talking about my reaction to our most recent class viewing: The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Going into this film I really knew almost nothing about it, which feels insane in hindsight. Don't get me wrong I've heard tons of people talk about this movie, and I knew that Tim Curry was in it, but honestly that was pretty much it, but I was still super excited coming into the showing, and BOY WAS I NOT DISSAPOINTED! So the opening is cool and sets things up, but lets just jump to when shit got really good, lets talk about when Tim Fucking Curry enters the arena. In my title I said that this is my new favorite musical, that is 100% true, and that is 1000% because of the absolutely breath taking performance from Tim Curry. In my opinion, Tim Curry has one of the most unique voices I've ever heard. I've been listening to the song "Sweet Transvestite" on repeat since we watched the movie. It's just so god damn good. It's brilliantly written, and then Tim Curry just smashes it out of this universe with the way he plays with it. Truly a professional in their prime. Also, can we talk about that entrance? I mean COME ON! That has to be one of the top 10 entrances in anything, ever. so good! Beyond Tim Curry, I also loved how this movie is just so unapologetic and powerful. I can't imagine what it must have been like seeing this movie for the first time as a person in the LGBTQ+ community. Maybe it's the way I feel when I watch Superhero movies, just totally inspired, and filled with a desire to attempt to emulate the powerful characteristics of the people I'm seeing on the screen. I can see clearly now why this film is so widely loved. Not just because it's a great musical, but also because of what it means to the people who whish they could live as confidently and free as Frank N. Furter. I do wish however that they didn't have to be an alien from so far off planet, and I also wish that they didn't have to die. It feels so similar to the movies that paint these people as "monsters." Yeah in the end Janet and Brad get to return back to their world, I'm not sure if they or their relationship will ever be the same, but still they get that choice, should they choose to ignore everything that's happened, but did it have to be that why? Did they have to be "Freed" in the end? I don't know, but personally I know I wish that Frank N. Furter would have "won." I'm not exactly sure how that would have been accomplished, but it still would have been super cool to see! Overall, I loved this movie. The music, the acting, the power, everything. I was just totally inspired and that feels so rare lately with anything I watch, so it was nice to have a reminder of what that feels like. Thanks for reading. I hope you enjoyed the movie as much as I did. Drop a comment, and let me know. Until next time.
Best,
Donovan W. Gale
