The Rocky Horror Picture Show - John Cunningham
Well, this certainly was something. I'm not entirely sure what sort of something it was, but it was definitely... something. It got me laughing in some parts though.
This movie was rather chaotic to say the least. It started off in a relatively standard movie manner (aside from the musical numbers) and then just amped up the wackiness to 11. Honestly, I don't think I could have ever been prepared for this movie. It had musical numbers, murder, goofy contraptions, aliens, mythology references, gothic architecture, historical statues, you name it. Now, in terms of queer representation, I'm not sure I can say much that hasn't already been said or isn't openly apparent when watching the film. However, I got the notion from certain bits of dialogue that the castle/house was supposed to be corrupting their minds, which would be shown off in the penultimate dance number in which they seem to have "given in to pleasure". I'm not sure how on target this is (or if it's even on the target at all), but I hope it's somewhat beneficial to discussion. Aside from that, I also enjoyed how elaborate the sets were for such an old movie. They reminded me of well-crafted stage pieces.
To summarize, I'm not sure how I felt about this movie. On one hand, I think I enjoyed the humor thrown throughout, but I found it rather difficult to follow the storyline. It seemed to go where it pleased.
