The Power of Frank N. Furter - Diego Flores
The film, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”, changed the representation of queerness in a positive way. This film let people know that it’s okay to be queer and they should embrace it. Before this film, the film industry gave people the idea that being queer was a bad thing and you should be afraid of being queer. This made a lot of queers hide in the closet and not want to come out because of the way they were being represented. This was until “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” came out and it changed the way queer people should act. All the queer in the film were proud of they were and they weren’t trying to hide for anyone. This is a huge change because in most films, queer characters were seen as a joke or they were get killed off at the end. For example, Frank N. Furter was represented as a queer character who wasn’t afraid of being different. He wore women's makeup and in most films this will be used for comedy but not in this film. Frank was portrayed as a man who was confident with the makeup on and he wasn’t afraid of anyone judging him. This gave people the message that it was okay to wear women's make up and you shouldn’t try to hide who you are just to try to fit in. Many queer people were able to have hope and a positive influence because of this film.
“The Rocky Horror Picture Show” helped bring a lot of queer people together and made them realize that it’s okay to be yourself. It doesn’t matter what bad things they did in the film because this was the first positive representation of queerness in films. Many homophobic people must have hated this movie the time it came out because of the the character of Frank. It doesn’t matter what they think at the end of the day because of gave a whole new generation of queer people something to look up to. In conclusion, this movie was something different to what I’m used to. I have never watched this film before but I ended up enjoying it at the end. Thanks to this class I’m able to watch movies that I never would've on my own time.
