Rocky Horror - Emily Richards

 I really love this movie.  It was my second time watching it and after the second time I enjoyed it even more.  This movie is obviously queer and I love that.  While watching it this second time it really made me think of how it probably shaped the time it came out out.  During the time when this movie came out queerness was really starting to come out of its shell.  It was also a big time when dressing up in drag become a thing.  I wondered while watching if this movie helped pave the way for drag queens today.  I think it could have definitely help with normalizing dressing up in drag.  Another part about this movie that I love it that sexuality is so free and fluid.  Dr. Frank n Furter is so open about who they are and for a movie for this time period that a great thing to see.  Someone who is so sexuality positive and who is comfortable in their skin.  I think that all the messages that this movie gives off has really paved the way for queerness in the world and for the world of queer cinema. I also just love how cheesy and campy this movie is, its always fun to watch movies like this.  Over all I really love this movie and watching it again really made me see other important aspects that I didn't realize the first time.  I love getting to watch movie over again that make me see different things.

    Emily,

    I was also thinking about what role this movie played during the mid 70's when it was released. I also was curious about the affect it had on the LGBTQ+ community and if it helped more people come out to the world about their identity. I also wonder if it could have had a negative effect and slowed down that process for some people. I wish we discussed this particular topic in class because it would have been very interesting to find out that information.

    Follow Up Post-
    After our class discussion it really made me of different things about this film I would not have thought of on my own. Watching this movie and the others so far has made me more aware of the queerness in older films. One thing that came up in class was the music and I think the music really makes the movie what it is. The music really helps in telling the story and it definitely would not be the same with out the music. Over all I really enjoyed this movie, it was the second time I had seen it and I enjoyed just as much as the first time.

Why Did Cocteau Base This Film on the Legend of Orpheus?

      As it says in the title of this blog post, I don't get why Cocteau decided that this film associate itself with the original myth of Orpheus, because in my opinion the only similarities are the main characters names and the going to the afterlife to retrieve a dead wife thing.  In the versions of the Orpheus myth I'm familiar with Orpheus is much less of a outright ass to Eurydice.  He's a absentminded and neglectful husband sure, but he certainly doesn't threaten her with harm when he's mad or act like he doesn't even like her.  I honestly feel that if it wasn't for the driver he never would've gone to save her.  Which leads me to another point, I feel like Heurtebise acts more like the Orpheus I am familiar with that Orpheus himself.  Although I suppose this is fitting as the two seem to be two sides of the same coin to me.  In my opinion Heurtebise embodies the love for Eurydice Orpheus seems to have thrown by the wayside in his sear...

           It is inherently interesting, at times heartbreaking how the culture for cinema changed when depicting LGBTQ+ characters. Celluloid Closet - John Cunningham

 As a child, I lived a very sheltered life. My hometown was small, my school was small (and Catholic), and I was an only child in my small (also very Catholic) family. Needless to say, I was not taught (nor did I see) much about of other walks of life outside my own. Due to my upbringing, this documentary was quite eye-opening for me. It unveiled the plights of a group of people that I had never truly understood the gravity of.
