Bernadette: The Peoples Champion - By: Donovan Gale

Hello everyone! Thank you all for tuning in and taking some time out of your schedule to look over my blog post. This time,  I want to do things a little bit differently. Normally I would talk about the movie, what parts I liked,  and what parts I loved, but today I want to talk about a specific part of the movie, and not the movie as a whole. Before I jump into that though, I do want to just briefly say that I loved The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert. The movie had so much heart, the acting was so good, and I loved the story that was being told. Overall I 100% loved the film. However, of all the parts, people, places, it was really just one thing that had me jumping up and down with cheer, and that was the character of Bernadette. This woman is my hero. From the moment she walked onto the screen I was obsessed with her look and the way she carried herself. I think for me, one of the biggest things that I like right away was her style. I think normally when people think of Drag Queens they probably imagine people a lot more like Adam, but Bernadette was just so much more developed than that. She'd been through so much more, and was just so strong because of it. The article talked about this specifically with Bernadette. That she "Bernadette has had to fight so hard and for so long to secure her female gender identity, both physiologically and in the eyes of society." That one line from the article alone made me want an entire movie just about Bernadette's backstory. I want to see her experience these battles and transform into the powerful woman that she is in this film. The confidence she had was mesmerizing. I honestly wish I had the courage to be so unapologetically myself in that same way that Bernadette is. The article also talked about how Bernadette represents a "demure femininity" through the way she behaves and holds herself, movements and behaviors that were "painstakingly cultivated over the years." She is just so, so powerful to me. I can't imagine how many hundreds of thousands of people have called her names or told her to "act more normal" but she ignored them and stayed true to herself, and in the end became one of the most powerful women I think I've seen on screen. I just loved her. I loved her attitude, I loved the way she took care of her friends, and I loved the way she didn't take any shit from anyone. I walked away from this movie wanting to be more like Bernadette, and my hope is that over time I can build up the same level of courage and determination that she had in this film. God, just listen to the way I've been talking about her, a fictional character? SO COOL! I just love when film has this kind of effect on me, it reminds me why I want to do it. In conclusion: Bernadette is one of the most powerful women I've seen on screen, and I'm beyond thankful for this gift given to me through her character. I hope we can all learn to be as powerful as Queen Bernadette.

  1. I agree wholeheartedly. Bernadette had a very powerful stage presence and I would argue was the very crux of the movie. She brought an element of dry humor to the table that I absolutely adored. While I did enjoy the movie and think that it was very good overall, I do believe that Bernadette's character carried a vast majority of scenes from "good" to "excellent". The message of perseverance that she delivers is quite strong as well. Bernadette's story is truly an example of never giving up.

  2. Hi Donovan! I really love how you revolved basically your entire post on Bernadette. She was also my favorite character by far. In my post I called her a queen too because I honestly can't think of a better way to describe her. You did this perfectly in your post. She's seriously a great role model with how as you said she's unapologetically herself. She's such a badass woman but also so caring, I just love it. But- I hate how you mentioned wanting another movie with her backstory- because now I want that too!!! I just know that she has grown so much and I think that would make for an awesome film. Loved your post!
