Orpheus- Olivia Vinci

Overall I did enjoy the movie Orpheus but at points I found it hard for me to focus since I am not used to watching films that are not in English. Orpheus is a Greek myth about a musician to has to go into the underworld to reclaim his dead wife. I have honestly never have heard of this Greek myth so maybe that was what made the confusing and also more interesting to me. This film was set in modern day Paris at the time and showed a lot of twists and turns and modern aspects such as the clothing of the actors and also related to with death as a counterpart. This film did focus on a lot of different themes throughout but the main theme that was focused upon was death. The Princess is seen to represent "death" in this film and I really enjoyed how death was portrayed in this way. Usually when you think of death you think of it as something evil or in any type of negative light but the director of this movie showed death as a delicate women and I think that is an interesting and different way to go about it.

The way that mirrors and special effects in this movie were portrayed were honestly very ahead of the time this was made. The use of mirrors in this film were showed as a way to go into other worlds or a different dimension. I think this was a good way to show that an everyday object can be used in a film to make it more interesting and enjoyable to watch. Also, the parts about the car radio were a bit confusing to me but I did find it interesting how fascinated he was with it. I also found it interesting that the movie kind of ended where it started and shows that in the end the main character still lost everything. Overall I did enjoy this movie even though it was a little confusing to me at points.

  1. Hi Olivia! I completely agree that some of the parts in this movie were very confusing to me. I think it would have been very beneficial if there were certain points where I could rewind the movie and rewatch them just so I could fully understand. I love what you said on the idea of death and how it was portrayed so well in the film. In most horror movies that I see death is seem as something vicious and evil, not a woman like this. I think that it worked very well for the movie.

  2. Hey Olivia, don't worry about not being able to understand this movie very well, trust me you're not alone here. I honestly couldn't understand a lot of the movie, especially when they go back in time... to restore the past... to save Orphee and his wife... yeah you can understand what I mean that it was confusing haha. Anywho I love your post, it had a ton of great details about the movie, such as where and when it was filmed. these details are very import to because we can also figure out what were the basic norms were during that time and place. I have to also highly agree with you about the mirrors being used in this way was very advanced for it's time. We have to remember that this is an old movie so it was very shocking to me that they were using this type of concept of jumping in and out of these mirrors during this time, especially with all these special effects. If you want to read about theories homosexuality or queere ness within the movie you should check out my post. I t maybe jumbled but you can read all my theories of homosexuality and queerness within the movie. Cool quote btw!

  3. Totally agree with your thoughts on the way they portrayed Death, and that it was interesting to see them go in a totally different direction from what is normally shown. Normally when we see death we always imagine some mysterious figure under a large hooded robe wielding a massive scythe, and in this movie they kind of turned that on it's head a little. I actually really enjoyed this portrayal of Death. I liked the way they swept people away in their cars, and I also loved those bikers that would always drive by before someone was about to die. Super cool, I would love to know what the inspiration for that was.

  4. Hey Olivia, I totes concur, the special effects were way ahead of this movies time and they were really used to make everyday things appear supernatural and interesting. The car radio was one of my favorite parts of the movie in that it felt so unique and strange (but in a good way). This movie is full of weird things like walking through mirrors and death bikers but I mean that in the best way possible.
