Orpheus Initial Post - Emily Richards

I really enjoyed watching this film.  It was actually very different than I thought it was going to be.  When I first heard of the story of Orpheus I thought we were going to be watching a more mythology type film, not a modern film for the time with a mythology tone to it.  I thought the theme of this film was very interesting.  It talked about the concept of death in a very interesting way.  Another thing that was interesting was the use of the mirrors.  I thought It was interesting how they were used for a few different reasons.  one reason to have a way to get from one world to the other and the other I think it could be a symbol to take a look at your life before you make decisions.  It seems like a reminder to make sure you understand how precious life is.  One thing that I thought of while watching this film was that it gave me Penny Dreadful vibes.  Penny Dreadful is about death following people around and while watching this it remined me of that.  The girl from Penny Dreadful also looked a lot like the girl from this film.

Over all, I thought this film was very enjoyable and interesting to watch.  I definitely would not have watched it if it weren't for this class.  I love getting to watch films like this that take a deeper look at life and how things work in it.

    Hi Emily,

    I hadn't thought about the mirror like that, and it makes complete sense now that you've said it. This idea makes the movie feel much more impactful. When I first saw the mirror used as a door, my brain went "ooh, mirror = door, cool" and that was that. Thank you for the perspective shift!

    Follow Up Post - Emily Richards
    After reading others post, it really made me look at this film in different ways. I definitely didn't look at it from an editing point of view. I think looking at how the mirrors were used not just as a metaphor but also as a editing technique to help move the story from one dimension to the other. Also, others post opened my mind to the talk about the queerness in this movie and how it could have the undertones because of the director and his real life love interest. I never would have thought of these things if it weren't for other people perspective.

    Hey Emily, I agree with you on thinking that this film was going to be more of a mythology film. I didn’t really know much about Orpheus before watching the movie but by our discussion before the movie, I thought the same thing as you. It made me wonder how different this movie will be if it was more of a mythology film. I also found it interesting that you pointed out the fact that it reminds you of Penny Dreadful. I have never watched the film but after reading your response and looking at the pictures, I can kind of see the similarities. The way you also thought about the mirror was very interesting because I didn’t think about it like that.

Jared Lestenkof I think I’ve seen “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of The Desert” before or at least I’ve seen scenes from it because I recognized a lot of it. It got to the point where I was trying to guess what was going to happen next and I was right half the time. The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert- Olivia Vinci

     This was by far my favorite movie we have watched this semester and I would 100% watch it again. I absolutely loved the main characters and how they all kind of bounced off of one and another. They were all different it their own ways and at different points throughout the movie you found out more and more about their personal lives and sort of the "demons" that they face outside of the world of being a drag queen and as a performer. Bernadette was a character that really spoke with me throughout this film. She is seen as an aging transgender woman who in her previous life she went by Ralph and is seen to be the one who is the most out spoken. She does speak her mind and lashes back at anyone who throws prejudice and bullying in their way. Priscilla, Queen of the Desert -Sarah Dickerson

Before watching this movie I decided to look it up to see what to expect. When I did this it set my expectations pretty high and this movie did not disappoint. Something about Drag Queens always just gets me- the hair, the makeup, the drama, the exaggerated personalities. I just love all of it.  My main focus for this blog post is going to be on the characters. I loved how each character was portrayed so much differently but at the same time they meshed together so well. The reading for this week did a great job summarizing this. Bernadette was by far my favorite character in the film. There's no other word that I think can describe her better than a queen. My favorite scene in the film was when the lady at the bar tried to kick out the trio because they "don't accept their kind there".
