Homosexuality In Hollywood -Jon Vitka

I thought that this video was very insightful, sure there were some very disturbing scenes within the video but, it helped a lot with how impactful this video could be. The video starts off by stating the feeling that people got from the word homosexual. Whether it was scary, funny, or even sad, it was a very important word that would later impact the world.
I felt like the movies that were shown were fascinating since I have watched some of that move or seen clips and snips of some which I thought were funny moments within the old movies. Little to my knowledge that I would realize that these movies actually talked about how it was to be gay or queer or even homosexual and its impact on the movie industry. One of the most mind-blowing things that I learned from this video was hearing about the Catholic church even threatening Hollywood Studios productions, a boycotting their movies if they didn't stop these homosexual movies. When this happened Hollywood had to quickly adapt to this making several restrictions on anything that could remotely hint towards homosexuality, as the actors who may be homosexual had to quickly change to these strict rules.
Before the restriction of homosexuality movies people who went to those movies usually never even stopped to think about whether or not it was homosexual or not. Most of the time they would watch the movie and laugh at the people who would crossdress especially the males but when it was a woman who crossed dressed as a male no one laughed. Later after the restrictions, the movies began to add homosexuality back but it would always end with the homosexual person having a gruesome death. In one of the movies called freebie, they had a villain who was homosexual and was later killed by the main hero as they were shot several times over and over again. As this scene was happening the audience was clapping as people didn't know whether it was because the hero killed the villain or if it was because the homosexual person died.
Overall this video was very inspiring since it opened my eyes to all these old movies and the evolution of the word homosexual. It was very interesting hearing the actors and screenwriters talk openly about how they felt about homosexuality while they were acting or even watching the movies they acted in.
Within our class discusions I learned about several other hidden homosexuality sceens in diffrent movies that we brought up within class. Like frog and toad, it was visably obvious that they were gay, even in recent cartoons such as Steven Universe. It was mind boggling to see that all these shows had hidden homosexuality within them because we wouldn’t usually be able to realize it. Later in class we learned about what sterio types do we see with men, such as seeing a male as a jock or a nerd. I would like tp mention about how media really helped to influence about homosexual people, expecially back then when most of social media didn’t exists. Which ment the most form of entertain ment was really through tv and movies. Social media helped influenced us on our thoughts about people, for exsaple if someone liked something from a LGBT person they will be feed more of that. If you then liked a post aginst LGBT you will recive more post of hating LGBT.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you Jon, I feel like a lot of scenes were disturbing but they had to include it to show us just how much they went through. I found it very interesting when the movie talked about how when a guy wears women's clothes they would laugh but if a woman wears men's clothes no one would laugh. It shows how stubborn and homophobic a lot of guys are. This idea could still relate in today's society. Even today if a woman wears mens clothes then a lot of people will think that she's powerful and strong. If you man were to wear women's clothes then people would automatically assume that he’s gay and a lot of guys wouldn’t really want to be around him. A lot of this has to do with toxic masculinity. People don’t expect men to dress in women's clothes or else they will be looked at as “weird”.
