Wolfwalkers

I thought this movie was amazing. Maybe it's because we usually watch movies that are older and this one was more recent, but it was great. Firstly, I loved the art. When the film started it was one of the first things I realized. Especially when they showed the scent-sight that wolves have and that wolfwalkers have while they're in transition. Being able to see each others scent and the scents of everything around them was interesting and looked complicated to execute given the medium of the film. It was also a good indicator because I couldn't really tell if Mebh's mother, Mav had bitten Goodfellow, but when he started to see the scent-sight, it was a clear marker that he was turning into a wolfwalker. Being in this class, has showed me the clear signs of queerness between Robyn and Mebh. It was a genuine connection between them off the bat. Some may call this 'love at first sight' (even though it isn't a romantic love) because Mebh was automatically intr...

Wolfwalkers: Mehb and Robyn's "puppy love" saves the day

Image
I really enjoyed this film.  I mean it has a beautiful portrayal of the blossoming love between two girls and anti-christian sentiment.  What more could I want as a godless queer myself?  I think that it's wonderful that young children are seeing such a positive representation of found family and accepting those who are different.  Even before she is turned into a wolfwalker, Mebh treats Robyn with nothing but curiosity and kindness.  Robyn finds love an acceptance not only with her relationship with Mebh, but Mebh's mother also takes Robyn is as her own.  She also rebuilds her relationship and gains acceptance from her disapproving father.  This strained relationship and eventual reconciliation only plays further into the queer subtext.  Also, even if you choose to ignore the queer subtext this is still a wonderful story about two brave little girls fighting together to defeat the bad guys.  This breaking ...

The Magical Queerness of Wolfwalkers

Image
After taking this class for a semester I can easily tell the who the queer characters are. I really enjoyed this movie and it’s story. Probably because it’s a modern day made movie. In Wolf Walkers I could see the relationship Robyn and Mebh had instantly. Right from the first interaction they had together. Robyn is caught in a trap and Mebh, as a wolf, first reaction was curiosity. Not attack. She free’s Robyn from the trap and in the process accidently bites her. This bite eventually turns her into a wolf walker, a half human, half wolf. The transformation process closely resembled coming out. Robyn is a young kid who has a creative imagination who loves to talk about fairytales. In this movie any talk about wolf walkers is forbidden because it scares the townsfolk. But Robyn knows wolf walkers are not what they are perceived as. Mebh acts as Robyn’s queer guide because she persuades Robyn to defy her father’s wishes to come and hang out with her in the woods. When Mebh bit R...

'Tangerine' Director: Transgender Stars Deserve More Recognition

https://www.thewrap.com/tangerine-director-transgender-stars-deserve-recognition-oscars-spirit-awards/ Aside from the whole spiel about how Tangerine was shot on an iPhone, it touches upon unique topics such as the actual title of the film, the importance of setting the film during Christmas Eve, and the kind of category it should be recognized for, should it campaign for an Oscar nomination.
